Today I’m speaking at Deans Community High School at the first
SAGT Higher Student Conference of the year. In the morning I’ll be presenting on
Population and in the afternoon I’ll be running a Development and Health
Workshop.
The sides for my population presentation are below – sorry about
the first one. Not sure why that keeps happening!
Friday was the last in this years series of Geography Higher
Student Conferences organised by the SAGT.
The Dalkeith (revision) Conference is the biggest of the four student
conferences organised by the SAGT. I
presented a Population Keynote in the morning to about 300 students and then
ran two workshops on the Development and Health Environmental Interaction in
the afternoon. All of the delegates in my workshop sessions were superb,
motivated and ready to learn – let’s hope that their motivation is mirrored by
other higher students all over the country.
The good thing about the higher conferences is that there is
always a chase to catch up with other like minded practitioners to chart about
worries and recent successes (thanks for the photo Val!).
The big worry at the moment within the Geography community is what will happen
to Geography teacher under the Curriculum for Excellence?
I have been speaking at the Higher Conferences for the last
five years. I still remember my first one at Dean Community High School. I was one of
the first of the presenters to use PowerPoint as a presentation tool. Until
then most people were still using slides, their voice or OHP’s. As I was looking
at my population presentation the night before the conference and up-dating
some of the statistics, it struck me how out-of-date and dry it really was. So
to motivate me to work on a completely new version I have posted a copy of the
presentation below as a slideshare file. Although, I share almost everything
that I produce. I have always resisted sharing my SAGT Student Conference
Presentations so that they don’t get used by other teachers before the conference.
Hopefully by posting the presentation here, it will motivate me to ‘practise what a preach’ and get my presentation
up-to-date and cutting edge for next years delegates.
UPDATE: Hmmm - not quite sure why some of the slides are blocked out in red. Guess I'll have to fix that soon!
