Sustainability is a key element of the Vancouver Games as hundreds of athletes from around the world gather and compete in such a fragile environment.
This is one of the videos from the official Vancouver 2010 YouTube Channel. It shows an animated overview of the sustainability initiatives from VANOC and its partners. It would make a great lesson starter activity.
There are a number of other resources to support the video including this very detailed video storyboard and background information sheet.
There are also lots of other videos over on the official Vancouver 2010 YouTube Channel that could be used in schools.
The official Vancouver 2010 web site also has its own sustainability pages that is definitely is worth a look as they contain links to a number of great resources including:
- Discover more about VANOC’s Carbon Management Program.
- A Carbon Calculator to help you offset your carbon footprint for travel and accommodation (remember you can just imagine you are visiting!).
- Tips to be environmentally friendly while watching and getting to events.
NOTE: The Geographical Association has also recently posted some other idea to help teach about the Olympics - well worth a look.

It's not shaping up to a be a good games... I gather that one of the venues just went into administration and that they're bringing snow in on trucks! That won't do much for the carbon footprint.
