At some point on the 2nd
February the Google Earth community is expecting the announcement of Google
Ocean – I’ve written about this
before here. As I have been following the rumours I noticed that a number of blogs
have been commenting on the fact that the last Google Earth up-date included significant
up-dates of the imagery around the coastline.
As a result of these up-dates some small islands seem to have disappeared? I was particularly interested in the disappearance of the Isles of Scilly so I decided to check it out myself.
The Isles of
Scilly are the most westerly part of England
and form an archipelago of six inhabited islands and numerous other small rocky
islets (around 140 in total) lying 45 km (28 miles) off Land's End.
Sure enough, when I went into Google Maps there was no visible sign of the Isles of Scilly in Satellite view:
But when I turned the ‘features’ (used to be hybrid) menu on
the roads appeared!
I’ve visited the Isles of Scilly twice,
my Grandparents had some great friends that lived there and I remain very fond
of the place.
The first time I visited was on my fifth birthday – I remember it because I got a Spiderman costume! The second time I was 26 – I remember it because I sea kayaked the 28miles from Lands End to avoid paying the ferry charge! On that particular trip we spent five days exploring the islands and even made it out to Bishops Rock lighthouse (the most westerly point of the British mainland) I seem to remember there was quite a swell that day!
Anyway, lets hope the isles
of Scilly gets back on Google Earth and Google Maps soon – its too beautiful a
place to simply disappear.

Ollie that was extreme way to get there - we are going over for friends wedding in Sept (Glasgow Girl marrying local) and looking forward to the trip - but we'll be on the ferry ;-)
