I’ve got a couple of friends who are spending Christmas in New York which reminded me about the new 3D rendered building layer in Google Earth for New York City. A screen shot of what New York looks like now in Google Earth is pictured above – it looks more like a photograph than Google Earth.
According to the Google Earth Blog there are perhaps 1000’s
of newly rendered buildings in the New York Layer. The feel of New York in Google Earth
looks very different to what it did in January 2007 (see below) and it’s going
to be really impressive to see which cities are created in 3D next –hopefully we
might even get some Scottish ones?
Now if you were disappointed that Spiderman isn't on the TV this Christmas you can re-enact the great scenes from the movies by flying from 3D building to 3D building around New York in Google Earth. Here is how you do it from the Google Earth Users Guide:
Swoop to the top or side of 3D buildings - To do this, right click (CTRL + click on the Mac) on the building and drag the mouse. You can swoop from building to building by doing the same. Note that this feature does not work with imported SketchUp models.
- View a 3D building
from different perspectives - To do this, click the middle mouse
button (Shift + mouse button if your mouse does not have a middle button).
