Coaching is on the school management team meeting agenda tomorrow so I have been refreshing my memory. I was given this book when I went on a coaching course just before the summer holidays. There are some interesting ideas here and I think an opt in coaching programme could be useful to some staff. In many ways it is could be a lot more constructive and target focused than the current Staff Development and Review. Anyone want to be coached for six weeks? or does anyone want to coach me?

Just received the new Teaching Geography magazine which includes an interesting article on "Coaching for Geography Teachers" - made me think of your post - have added it to "the reading pile". See you next week!

Hi Ollie
I have now made the connection to your website. It is great! I was looking through some of your posts and came across this one on coaching. Did you find someone to coach? And someone to coach you? I am doing a project in Shetland next month on coaching development for teachers and it would be good to hear how it is going in East Lothian.

Hi Jackie and well done on the detective work!
I’ve had a couple of practice goes coaching different people – mainly friends. The main problem seems to be that people don’t really understand what coaching is. Most people seem to think that it is about providing all the answers rather than helping people to find the answers themselves. Member of our school community are also not entirely happy with being coached by a member of the school management team. I am trying to think of some creative ways to get around this problem so that I can build on some of my training. I found out today that East Lothian want to have all of their school managers to have an experience of being coached. This is being rolled out over a three year programme so I’m not quite sure how long it will take me to get a place.
Have fun in Shetland! Ollie
